Treadmill Body Solid
Why won’t my thighs tone?

I’m going on a holiday on the 27th of March, 2008 and I want to be in shape when I go so I can look at least half decent in my bikinis. I’ve started excercising, and I try to do it everyday, but usually miss out on a couple of days because of school work.
I run on the treadmill for 20 minutes, bike on the machine for 25-30 minutes and rowing machine for 10 minutes. I do Tae-Bo on Saturdays too.

Just wondering why won’t my thighs tone up? I know that you can focus on a particular part of the body. But my thighs just won’t seem to give; especially the upper thighs.
I’m built solid, but not muscular.

I’d really appreciate your perspective.

All of those forms of exercise are great and you should absolutely keep them up, but they are basically cardio-vascular exercises, meaning their main job is to get your heart rate up, burn calories, and to improve endurance as well as cardio-vascular (heart and lung) function. They will do alot to keep you healthy. But they don’t do alot in the muscle-toning department. While muscles do get stronger while doing those things (as long as you keep increasing the challenge), you will really need to focus on doing strength training exercises for your lower body.

In other words, weight lifting. Don’t worry; you won’t look like a body-builder! Cardio exercise burns fat, but if the muscles underneath the fat are not well formed, then you might shrink sizes without actually changing the shape of you legs much. For legs (and hips) you need exercises to shape the different muscle groups evenly.

Here are the groups you need to focus on:
Quadriceps, they are the top front of your thighs
Hamstrings, they are the back of your thighs (and the part most of us gals have trouble with celllulite on)
The inner thighs (can be harder to tone, but there are some good exercises out there)
The outer thighs, and these exercises will include the hip as well
The calves-these are the easiest.

If you go to the gym, it’s time to ask the people working there to show you how to work the leg machines. It will be the fastest, easiest way to see results. The machines are easier to use than they look so don’t be intimidated. Just remember that as they exercises get easier, you will have to increase the amount of your weights and the number of repetitions you do in order to continue seeing results. Otherwise, you’ll get only so far and then no longer see improvements.

I gained too much weight with my last child and finally decided to join the gym for Christmas. I am so glad I did. The difference in the look of just the cellulite after a month was impressive. But it was weights I was doing 3 days a week and not cardio! Now I alternate: cardio exercise (walking, biking, elliptical) Tues, Thurs, Sat., and strength training Mon, Wed, Fri. This is working great.

You’ll do well especially if you have been doing all that other cardio stuff, because you’ve already toned up some doing those. Just don’t forget to warm up before strength training and to stretch gently but thoroughly afterwards.

For workouts at home, videos and dvd’s are wonderful and they are available in many workout levels and can be an excellent way to strength train at home if you don’t have a gym membership. Also, some great books, Kathy Smith’s “Lift Weight to Lose Weight”, Denise Austin’s “Hit the Spot”, and there’s a Dummie’s one too, but I can’t remember if it’s “Weight Lifting for Dummies” or “Strength Training for Dummies”.

Good Luck!
