If an epidural makes you numb from the waist down, how do you give birth?
Just curious! I was reading up on epidurals and trying to weigh the pros and cons / what’s best for baby (I’ve never given birth before). And I read that epidurals make you numb so how can you push to give birth? Thanks in advance for answers 
It depends on the epidural – some you can walk around with (ambulatory epidural), others you can’t feel pretty much anything. My mother said when she had hers, she had to be told when to push by the midwife and was advised that it felt like doing a poo *l* (sorry, but it’s what she says!). You just sort of push even if you don’t feel yourself doing it – the midwife (or whoever is looking after you) will let you know how to do it. And at least there’s no pain and the drug doesn’t cross the placenta so there’s no risk of your baby getting drugged (just another reason why I’m having one if i need it!)
