Ski Pros need some help?
Why is there no pro Black skiers. There are tons of pro skiers both male and female….but i cant think of a single pro Black skier. Can You? Why is this?
It’s a matter of demographics and probability. Consider the total amount of white people vs the number of black people in the US. There’s your starting point. Then consider what it takes to become a pro-skier.
Most pros start skiing when they are very young and have parents who ski. A lot of them have parents who work in the ski industry or have careers with high incomes. For those of you who have never seriously raced…it’s not cheap. There are more white people with disposable income in the US than there are blacks. That’s just the way it is.
You also still don’t find a lot of black residents in ski towns. VT, CO, UT, ID, AK…all pretty white states, same in Sierras and Northwest. Blacks who do live in ski towns are usually imported help for the winter and some, like a friend of mine, just learned how to ski this past winter.
Show me a black man with disposable income and a passion for skiing who lives in Taos or Stowe and chances are he has a decent chance of having a kid who might have a decent chance of going pro.
