Vinyl Siding and Its Potential Drawbacks
One of the most popular materials used for siding in new construction projects is vinyl. The material is low maintenance and is easy for the domestic handyperson to buy from most large home centers and install.
Siding made from vinyl is available in a large variety of colors and thicknesses. It is a plastic used for the exterior cladding of a house either for decoration or waterproofing. Vinyl siding is the most commonly installed exterior cladding for construction of residential projects in the USA and Canada.
The thicker the vinyl siding, the more durable it is. Such material will withstand damage better and is more stable. The thickness is also referred to as “gauge”. Common gauge measurements are 0.04-0.045″ thick, while premium gauges measure 0.055″ thick. Naturally, such desirable features also come with a corresponding price tag, so make sure your wallet can withstand the impact. Siding material also comes in several different profiles intended to imitate the effect of wood siding.
As popular and easy to use as vinyl siding is, it does not come without some drawbacks. Some health care providers believe that manufacturing and disposing of vinyl, which is made from a polyvinyl chloride plastic resin, may be hazardous to health and the environment. They caution that fires in vinyl-sided buildings may cause toxic fumes to be released, thus posing a health hazard.
It is also considered a less than durable siding material when exposed to extreme weather. Strong winds can lift whole panels from the wall, while windblown debris and strong hail can puncture the material. When this happens, the entire panel has to be replaced. There is also the perception that this material is tacky and used to camouflage structural problems.
Despite its popularity and ease of installation and maintenance as construction material, detractors perceive vinyl to be a health hazard and eyesore. Even so, improvements in the manufacturing process may soon put these doubts to rest.
