What are your Health Insurance Options?
To begin with, it is important to know what your health insurance options really are. Laws regulating health insurance are different in every state, which means that health insurance plans will vary from state to state as much as they do from company to company. For example, health insurance providers in Oregon are not allowed to deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions, while health insurance providers in Pennsylvania can deny coverage, but must offer uniform premiums. – There are three basic components of health insurance:
Premiums are the fees that a customer pays to a health insurance provider for access to their services. The rate of the health insurance premium can be dependent on the health of the insured party, their age and gender, or the amount of the health insurance deductible chosen for a particular health insurance plan.
Deductibles & Co-Pays can Vary!
The deductible is the amount of the health care fees the customer is responsible for before the health insurance provider begins coverage. Health insurance deductibles are determined for an annual period. Having no health insurance deductible, or a very low health insurance deductible will usually result in a higher health insurance premium. Having a high deductible health insurance plan can result in benefits that most other health insurance plans do not afford, such as coverage of services that are not normally covered by health insurance providers.
A copay or coinsurance is the amount of a medical fee that the health insurance customer is responsible for. A copay is a set dollar amount determined for each service by the health insurance provider, while coinsurance is a percentage of the fee that the health insurance customer is responsible for. Copay and coinsurance rates can be higher when the doctor does not have a contract with the health insurance provider.
