If women want to make as much money as men from winning grand slams, shouldn’t they play five set matches too?
This is entirely unfair, for the womens’ winner to make as much money as the mens’ winner while doing half the work. I mean, a 3 set match in the US open for women is considered a tight one. A 3 set match in the US open for men is considered an easy victory. Think about it
Nope you are exactly right. I’ve written a very long, extensive sports editorial on this exact topic and all the research I’ve done says that women just don’t deserve equal compensation. It sounds so sexist and I wouldn’t fault a woman for being upset with me for saying that, but if one sees past the ridiculous cloud of an equal rights explanation, they will see that it’s time to look at things through the lens of common sense.
My favorite argument to cite in this situation is to look at statistics from last year’s Wimbledon. First off, of course, Nadal played far more and longer than Venus Williams, but the championship matches, the spot that earns you the big prize money, is where the real disparity is. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer played what is considered the greatest match of all time. Not that the final between the Williams sisters was a disappointment, it was entertaining and a very good match, but the men’s final was far better.
The women’s final: One hundred and eleven minutes long. Twenty-two games played over two sets, one hundred and fifty-seven points played. The men’s final: Two hundred and eighty-three minutes. Sixty-two games over five sets, four-hundred and thirteen total points. In every statistical category, the male competitors competed for well over twice as long as their female counterparts. The ratio of minutes played by Federer and Nadal vs. that of the Williams sisters: 2.55:1. Games: 2.81:1. Sets: 2.5:1. Total points: 2.63:1.
Someone else answering mentioned that it’s supposedly not about being paid at an hourly rate but at how much entertainment they provide. Well I’ll have you know that the television ratings show a huge disparity as well. I haven’t looked up average statistics, but in the case of last year’s Wimbledon final, BBC reported that the All-Williams final had drawn a peak audience in Europe of 4.9 million while the Nadal-Federer epic drew almost 14 million. Even across the Atlantic in the U.S., where you’d think an All-American women’s final would draw a larger audience, NBC reported the women’s final as receiving a 3.4% share of viewers at its peak while Nadal and Federer drew a 6.5% share.
So as you can see, by hours put in, OR audience attracted, the men simply deserve more because they put in more work and earn more money for the TV networks and the tournaments themselves.
